The Problem
Sickle Cell Anemia affects over 300,000 newborns each year and millions worldwide. Traditional diagnosis depends on manual microscopic examination — a slow, error-prone process that causes dangerous delays in resource-limited regions.
Our Solution
We developed an AI-powered diagnostic tool using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) that automatically classifies red blood cells into three categories: normal cells, sickle-shaped cells, and other blood components — built using transfer learning on VGG architecture, achieving state-of-the-art results that outperform all prior work on this dataset.

Breakthrough Results
Our model achieved 99.4% accuracy, outperforming previous methods on the same dataset (SVM 94%, VGG19 97.48%). Performance metrics were exceptionally high across all three cell classes.
Outperformed all prior work on this dataset — including VGG19 (97.5%) and SVM (94%) — with strong applicability in resource-limited clinical settings.
